CPRI Research Approval Process (External)

At CPRI, all internal and external research activities (including research and evaluation projects) require approval. Approval criteria include ALL of the following:

•  approval from relevant Direct and Program Manager (if CPRI staff)
•  scientific merit
•  absence of burden to participants/clients given other projects underway at CPRI
•  relevance of research to CPRI and MCYS vision and mandate
•  when data is involved

o        certificate of completion of Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS) tutorial; located at http://www.pre.ethics.gc.ca/eng/education/tutorial-didacticiel/
o        approval from a university Research Ethics Board (REB)

• approved CPRI Research Agreement form (RAF)

 Please note:

• a consultation may be requested by staff’s Direct/Program Manager or Research Program Manager to discuss proposed research activity
•  an additional review with the CPRI research ethics sub-committee may be required; should this occur, the applicant will be contacted within 7 working days from submission to set up a date to attend the research ethics sub-committee meeting
•  CPRI has the authority to deny any research activity request, regardless of university Research Ethics Board (REB) approval

APPROVAL PROCESS FOR EXTERNAL RESEARCHERS (including students)

All research conducted at CPRI by external researchers must involve participation of a CPRI staff member as the primary study-related contact person at CPRI (“primary contact person”) who is responsible for supporting external researcher in obtaining CPRI approval as well as any ongoing data collection activities.

Steps to obtain approval to conduct a research project by an external researcher:

1. submit an application to an REB for ethics approval
2. submit completed CPRI Research Agreement, along with TCPS certificate of completion and REB approval letter, to Research Program Manager
3. Once project approved (RAF signed by Research Program Manager and Administrator), a primary contact person (if not already identified) will be identified and research activities may begin
