About Us
What is Homeshare?
We are a specialized family placement program for children and youth who have multiple disabilities. Our placements are most often full-time and long-term, and the natural parents are an important part of their child's life. The child’s natural family keeps legal guardianship of the child while they are placed with a Homeshare Family. We are not connected with Children's Aid Societies.
Who does Homeshare help?
We serve children age 0 to 17, but once they are placed there is no final age when the youth has to leave the program. Homeshare continues to provide the same supports to children and adults for as long as they are placed in the program.
Children in our program have significant and complex multiple disabilities including a significant cognitive delay. They may be medically fragile or depend on medical technology (like a tracheotomy or a g-tube). They may have a diagnosis like autism spectrum disorder or have a dual diagnosis with challenging behaviours.
There are many reasons why a natural family is unable to care for their child at home. Homeshare offers an option for families who still want their child to be part of a family but are unable to provide this care in their own home.
What does Homeshare do?
Our workers look after the entire placement process. The Homeshare Coordinator visits the child and family at home to get to know them and matches them to a Homeshare family that is the right fit for their needs.
We recruit, screen, and train potential Homeshare families. We support our Homeshare families with in home services, after hours and emergency support, relief services, linking with community supports, and financial support.
We help our Natural Families to stay involved as much as they can, such as attending appointments, having their child home for weekends, visiting their child, and participating in Plans of Care.
Where does this happen?
Referrals and placements generally come from the West Region.
