Prelinguistic Communication
Archived Webinar (Recorded May 27, 2019)
Presented by Mandy Harloff, SLP & Alicia Romanson, SLP
This webinar was designed for professionals and caregivers to review the building blocks of communication (e.g., imitation, joint attention, cause and effect, turn taking, functional play, etc.) For most children the ability to communicate emerges naturally and starts long before the use of first words. However, for children with autism spectrum disorder or identified social communication deficits, intervention may be necessary to foster the growth of these foundational skills. In addition to a theoretical review, participants will learn practical strategies and leave with a variety of resources to encourage the development of prelinguistic communication skills.
Objectives
- Identify that communication starts before words
- List prelinguistic communication skills
- Understand how to develop client-specific strategies for therapy
- Have available resources for further professional learning

Setting problem behaviour in the correct context (or… why we don’t just “fix” kids)
Archived Webinar (Original Date: February 28, 2018)
Presented by Dr. Craig Ross
Though the question of how to address problem behaviour seems simple enough, the reality is that any behaviour, whether desirable or not, has developed through interactions between the individual and the environment. This webinar will help attendees to appreciate the multiple areas that need to be considered in order to truly address problem behaviour. A combination of formal discussion and composite case examples will be utilized. The emphasis will be on factors relevant for a developmental population, but the concepts and style of inquiry modelled is appropriate for all clinical populations.
When Problem Behaviour Happens for Children & Youth with Special Needs: The Role of the BCBA
Archived Webinar: (Original Date: January 25, 2017)
Presented by: Patty Petersen, BCBA & Monique Nagtegaal, BCBA
This archived webinar begins by describing what a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) does then explores basic principles of human behaviour, including the nature of reinforcement, behaviour function, and how behaviour is strengthened to increase the likelihood that it will happen again. This is followed by an examination of how some of the symptoms associated with special needs diagnoses can contribute to problem behaviour then, finally, a five-step plan for behaviour change is offered.
A Residential Approach to Dual-Diagnosis (Assessment and Intervention)
Archived Webinar (Original Date: November 23, 2016)
Presented by Dr. Craig Ross
Children and youth with a “dual-diagnosis” (i.e., an Intellectual Disability and another diagnosis) can present with forms of problem behaviour that are very difficult to manage in the community, at home, and at school. Although the factors leading to a residential admission typically involving behavioural severity, there is frequently an inaccurate understanding regarding the reasons for problem behaviour, as well as what can be reasonably expected from the child or youth. This archived webinar discusses the dual-diagnosis population from a skills perspective and conceptualize (problem) behaviour in terms of ABA principles. The importance of accurate assessment and considerations for intervention is highlighted through case example.
